My Exciting Day 13/01/2010
I’m not sure that exciting is the exact word I should have used, but I thought I would fill you in on the busy busy day I have had, with the help of a few visual aids (see above).
To start my day I had to navigate my way on two buses down to Valencia Street to apply for my social security card. The social security office is like the Job Centre in the UK only the people seem a lot scarier here. Some of the people I was queuing with would fit quite nicely into one of Louis Theroux documentaries!
I then took another bus and had a long walk into work and went straight into a launch meeting, this is where the whole of the children’s pub group gathers to find out what books we will be working on in the new season. I obviously cant say too much, but its all very exciting stuff and the Moomins were mentioned which makes me happy!
The Japanese illustrator Taro Gomi is visiting Chronicle at the moment to discuss future projects. He previously illustrated the very successful children’s activity books Doodles, Scribbles and Squiggles. We had a lunch for him which was a curious mix between Italian and Japanese (see sweet rapper and bright pink biscuit above). The whole design department is supposed to be having a brainstorming meeting with him tomorrow but I’m not sure how many of us will actually be able to go as he speaks next to no English and has a translator, so having us all there may be a bit much.
I spent the afternoon scanning art work and coming up with ideas for design lab, think I am going to go along the ‘craft at home’ route when developing products. One of the positive side effects of the recession is that it has created a huge amount of avid hobbyists who love to make and do, so I think crafts would sell quite well.
After work I hate to navigate my way on another two buses that were pretty delayed to the Mission to check out a new apartment, it was really nice so it made up for the long bus journey. The room is big and cheap. Unfortunately there are a lot of people looking round, so I am going to have to wait and see if I get it (please keep your fingers crossed for me).
The other exciting new of today is that I received my very own Schaedler Precision Rule today (I’m a design geek!) so now I can officially convert my English millimeters into American inches!
