On 01/01/2010 I will be relocating to San Francisco from London to take part in Chronicle Book's children's design fellowship and I have decided to document this amazing experience on here!

The Last Few Days….

Friday

The fortune cookies went down a storm! I’m not sure people fully got the Chronicle references in the fortunes though. I’m pleased to say we raised $1555 which was doubled by Chronicle!

I also had design lab today which went really well. I presented the scratch and sniff book covers, no one had seen them before. It started off a long reminiscent discussion about school days and having to cover your books. The question is would anyone out of choice/over the age of 16 use a book cover? Your thoughts please.

My craft ideas went down well, especially a cupcake set which incorporates Michi illustrations! I also wanted to challenge my self and choose a book that was out of my comfort zone, so I found one called ‘Peace of Mind in Earthquake Country’ By Peter I. Yanev. It particularly stood out to me as I have moved to somewhere which is very prone to earthquakes and I know nothing about what to do when one strikes. I’m now working on a product to run alongside the book that provides knowledge to travellers or newcomers to California.

Saturday

Today I went to SFMOMA (San Francisco Museum of Modern Art) with Emily and Sarah (the other fellows, see photo above). Its their 75th anniversary at the moment and to celebrate they are getting a number of local artists and designers to give a 7.5 minute talk on a piece of art they particularly like. We went to see Martin Venezky, who is a designer at Appetite Engineers and associate professor of design at California College of Art. He was talking about a very old and small photo of a young man dressed as a cowboy in front of a backdrop. Venezky referenced father throughout who was a photographer before he suddenly died when Venezky was young. It was quite a touching talk.

Sunday

I realised today that  have been living in Sunset for two weeks now and I have not looked around at all, so after a very early wake up skype from my entire family at 8am I headed down a couple of blocks to Sunset high street. There are some really cool shops full of the most random things such as character kitchen sink plugs and cuddly Obama toys! There are also a tonne of nail parlours so I shall have beautifully painted nails all the time! Sarah (one of the fellows) told me about how much she loves pancakes with eggs, bacon and syrup so I dubiously decided to try this strange combination. It was surprisingly good, but I could only eat about half before feeling completely sick!! My second accomplishment of the day was finding Robinson’s Apple and Blackcurrant squash in a shop round the corner from my apartment, I just don’t understand why the Americans don’t dink it!

As you can probably tell I had a fairly non eventful day!

Monday

Today was Martin Luther King day so I had no work. I decided to go and explore Haight street. Its a really cool street where the hippies all hung out in the 60s and still do today. There was a strong smell in the air reminiscent of my brother’s teenage bedroom! The shops are all really interesting and I managed to find an art shop so picked up some supplies, I’m looking forward to doing some drawing.

Tonight I went to Bikram yoga, which is yoga in a hot room. It was hard work but I feel really good now!
